Vaccine strain selection for seasonal influenza viruses

Trevor Bedford (@trvrb)

Vaccine strain selection by WHO

One strain chosen per seasonal lineage

Most rapid evolution in H3N2

Recent diversification of H3N2

Recent H3N2 vaccine choices

North American viruses from summer and early fall are predominantly A1b

Sera raised against Kansas/17 targets 3c3.A, but not A1b viruses

Sera raised against South Australia/34 targets A1b, but not 3c3.A viruses

Larger issue with egg-adaptation in recent H3N2 viruses

Immediate improvements to seasonal influenza vaccine platform

  1. Move to cell-based, pure protein or RNA vaccine
  2. Incorporate neuraminidase
  3. Pick vaccine sequence in ~Jun for ~Oct distribution
